Mame Khan Crowdfunding
Crowd funding is a real way of funding projects from all walks of life. The idea is that many people do contribute (smaller or bigger amounts) and receive something in return. Crowd funding has potential to replace the traditional methods of bank loans, venture capital and borrowing money, especially in the creative industries. In the West, announcing your crowd funding campaign is just as common as any of these other options, if not more so and I see similar potential for India to embrace this concept!
What is your new album about?
My debut album is all about Rajasthan and its Folk and Sufi music. Yet we have tried to give the music a new, surprising and modern twist. We want to stay close to the roots of our music, at the same time we like to reach out to a new generation of music lovers. What I can say, the music we create these days is packed with a lot of emotions and I do look so much forward to release the album in 2015!
Why do you use Crowd funding?
As an independent artist, crowd funding is a fantastic tool to actually stay independent. With the changing of the music industry most of the record labels have turned into distribution labels only. The chance to get funding from the music industry is not very high and even then one has to see if the deal works for one's own plans. I think in India, art and crafts always survived by patronage...I would love to revive this spirit of supporting and promoting art. Also, crowd funding gives a sense of democracy to the music industry, people do support whatever they like, opening space for niche genres and projects.
