Music Review: Unrequited Love by Dhananjay Collur
It was after 35 years of corporate and entrepreneurial life that Mr. Dhananjay “DJ” Collur decided to give his life a musical turn. He now peruses music as a passion of his life. The business man turned musician now spends his energy and time creating original music, giving them a form in lyrics and bringing it to life on a larger platform with the help of Songdew. He has released a set of songs, among which is the romantic medley “Unrequitted Love”. Needless to say, the sing captures the essence of a love which has been in waiting for a long while. Composed with the worldly charm and the classical notions, it immediately brings to mind those old times which the later generations have hailed as the golden age of music.
There is a beat to it which makes you want to tap your feet, shake your head and follow it up with a rhythmic snapping of your fingers. It exactly reminds the listener of the celebrated music from the 90s. The voice of the singer is slippery yet has a solid texture to it at the same time. It is energetic and melodious, which perfectly sets the mood for a proposal that soon ensues. It is the professing of on-sided love in subtle yet meaningful ways with touches of the classical jazz music in accompaniment.
There is a beautiful weaving of the guitar notes that remains prominent and defining to the whole of the song. To figure out all its different flavours, one has to be really attentive. Mixed with the guitar is the accentuating sounds of the Maraca which adds a varied touch. But the Latin originated Maracas have been a part of mainstream music for a long time now. With the addition of the drums, there is a soulful unrolling of music. There is a touch of pain in the lyrics which makes the music all the more relatable. It swells from the soft scores of guitar to the blend of all three instruments and the melancholy voice and ends abruptly, leaving one hanging for more. It ends leaving behind expectations of a reciprocation of the love which the singer pleads for.
