I always wanted to have a band that would be able to create a unique sound of our own as well as be the most entertaining live act on stage.
Having said that,I feel blessed to have been able to put a team of skilled musicians together who believed in my madness and vision of creativity and progress. Its been 8 long years for Bandish and although there has been certain changes in the line-up, we believe that our music has grown and so have we.
With 2 full length albums released under the flagship of Times Music and Universal music, six years in contract,5 music videos,Songs that topped the Indian music charts of MTV, channel V & B4U, Product endorsements and countless number of concerts,I feel Bandish has done well and still continue to be a force in the Indian music industry.
My journey In contrast to who I was(Guitar player)and what I have become today(Drummer,Composer,Producer) is a story by its self. It has been an honour for me to have performed and shared and collaborated with musical greats both, Internationally and nationwide.Euphoria, Junoon, Strings, KK ,Pete Lockett(UK)MohitChouhan,ShubhaMudgal, Amaan&Aayan Ali ,Nail factory(Australia) HFT, to name a few.
What is your practice regime? How much do you practice on a daily basis?
Although we are all very busy with our own little personal endeavours, the one thing we look forward to is hitting the rehearsal pad at any given time and day .We look forward to meeting up more then just jamming and enjoy a great bond of friendship and togetherness.. Creativity henceforward, takes care of its self.
Which are some of the artists who have inspired you?
I prefer following or listening to artist who have maintained their sound, dignity and integrity, artists who never really diverted or felt pressured by producers who try to mould them to suit the industry norms. One of them is our very own Indian Ocean.
Of the 2 albums, which is your most favourite track and why?
They are all my babies and each track has a story to tell, so it’s really hard to single out any one out of the 20 tracks released. Maybe it’sGoonj or Bandish featuring Pete Lockett, Tere Bin featuring KK,Khudabaksh featuring Krishna,KaiseKahoon written by SuhanandKirkere, Mahi, I Believe….am not sure which one to choose!!
You have been in and around the "Indie rock scene” from a long time. How much do you think it has changed during these years? What difficulties you had to face then which bands now-a-days don’t have to worry about?
Well yes, its has been an 18 year old long and solid musical journey for me. Some of the major difficulties we had then was, searching for a music label to release our album, as major labels have considerably more power and financial means to promote and distribute the product; thus increasing the chances of greater success. Sadly the artist had to fund the entire audio recordings as well as the shooting of a music video to be aired.
Music television channels then had enough air space to air our songs on constant rotation giving the artist National recognition.
Unfortunately, today with the invasion of Bollywood music, Independentartists and Bands are nowhere to be seen on national television.
However, the notable changes that have occurred since the late 80’s to the current scenario has been some sort of a musical evolution in terms of audio and visuals.
Technology has played a huge part andRecording an album in a state of the art studio, is no more a rarity.
Today with the introduction of independent music labels and Online releases, Some or many artists choose not to go to a major label if given the opportunity as independence generally offers more creative freedom.Bands and artists now have the power to release their product online and gain the benefits as well.
How was the experience to play for over 4000 audience at ‘Mountain Echoes’13?
Performing at Mountain Echoes was truly an honour for Bandish. Just the fact that we were invited by the Queen of Bhutan and to be a part of the Indo-Bhutan cultural exchange was a pleasure. This is one country we shall and will always remember for their Friendliness, warmth and hospitality.
We were shocked to see the turnout at the concert. There were people everywhere, screaming ,cheering and singing with us. Not to forget the mobbing post the concert. We felt blessed that day!!
Over 500 concerts and 2 album releases, what are your future plans?
At the moment we are ready with 3 singles and working on a script for the videos.
If all goes well and according to plan, we hit the new season with some quality music and new releases.
What would be your message to the aspiring bands and artists?
With the emergence of so many bands and individual artists in the music industry today, all I can say is, be honest toward your passion and pursue in what you truly believe in .Go confidently in the direction of your dreams and live the life you imagined. Perseverance hard work and belief is what it takes to be.
